Song Lian was a famous scholar in the Ming Dynasty. When he was a child, he loved to read. However, his family was too poor to buy him books. So he had to borrow books from others. And he always returned them on time. One winter, Song borrowed a book he loved. To keep it, he copied the whole book by hand, even in freezing weather. His mother asked, “Why did you stay up so late? The owner isn’t waiting for it.” Song replied, “Keeping promises is important. If I break them, no one will trust me.” Another time, Song promised to visit a teacher far away. When he was about to set out, it snowed heavily. His mother said, “Don’t go out until the snow stops! No one expects you to be on time in this weather.” But Song said, “No matter how heavily the snow falls, I must go. It would be disrespectful to break my promise to the teacher.” When he arrived, the teacher praised him highly. “Nothing stops you from keeping your word! You will achieve great things.”
Song indeed became one of the greatest writers of his time. His story teaches us that honesty and keeping promises lead to success.
