Huazhou shadow puppetry (皮影) is a folk art in Weinan, Shaanxi. It's around for over 2,000 years. The artists there are working hard to make it even better and more popular.
At the age of 14, Xue Hongquan began to learn shadow puppetry. Now he makes the puppets bigger and move more like people. He also uses modern art styles together with the traditional ones.
In 2015, Xue made a group, and the people in this group were young. Together, they made more than 10 new shadow puppetry plays. Most of them were popular with the people. In 2023, they made a play about Ne Zha. It brought shadow puppets, cartoons, and films together. It was a big success (成功).
Xue thinks it's important to keep the old art alive. He did a lot of things to make it come true. At last, Huazhou was given the name of "the hometown of Chinese folk culture and art" in 2021.
People there are also working hard to protect Huazhou shadow puppetry. Shaanxi Province teaches people how to do shadow puppetry and Huazhou often puts on shows in the forest park. Many people come to watch the shows.
More than 3,000 people get jobs in the shadow puppetry industry (行业) in Huazhou, and they make 30 million yuan every year.
"I'm glad that more and more people show great interest in Huazhou shadow puppetry through our plays. I think we have a bright future," Xue says proudly (自豪地).
