In the age of social media, receiving handwritten letters is becoming less and less common, but not for lifelong pen friends Patsy Gregory and Carol Ann Krause.
Gregory, from England, and Krause, from New York, began to send letters to one another across the Atlantic Ocean when they were both just 12 years old. What followed was a friendship that has lasted about 70 years.
Gregory and Krause say they sent around 800 letters and notes to one another those years, at least one letter every two months.
As Gregory came to her 80th birthday in 2024, she told her daughter, Steph Calam, that one of her biggest regrets(遗憾) was never meeting her pen friend in America.
But it wasn't a regret soon. On her 80th birthday, Gregory's children surprised her with a ticket to South Carolina, where Krause now lives, to meet her lifelong friend on July 14, 2024.
The two were both happy to spend time together. They had a lot to talk about. "It felt like meeting an old friend," Gregory said. "We got on like a house on fire."
While Gregory and Krause now chat more on social media than through letters, Gregory said she would encourage everyone to have a pen friend. "It's such a joy to receive a lovely letter," she said.
