The Torch(火把) Festival is a traditional festival among some ethnic groups in China. People of the Yi, Bai, Lisu, Naxi and Lahu in south-western China celebrate this festival. The Torch Festival usually falls on the 24th or 25th day of the sixth Chinese lunar month, with three days of celebrations.
Although there are a lot of stories about the festival's start, most of them have something to do with the worship(崇拜) of fire. People think that
it can drive away pests(害虫) and do good to crops.
At the Torch Festival, families light a torch. They hold the torch to the corners(拐角) of their houses and walk around the farms. Some even have a torch parade to drive away all bad luck and wish for a good harvest. The most exciting activity is the Bonfire Party. A large torch is set at the square of the village. People spend the whole night playing musical instruments(乐器) like lusheng, yueqin and sanxian, singing and dancing around the torch. Other interesting activities include wrestling, bullfighting and horse racing.
