(2026·扬州市仪征实验中学月考)Scientists have long known that chimpanzees(黑猩猩)sometimes use leaves or insects as medicine. Do you know they can also give “first aid(急救)” to each other? Scientists studying in Uganda found this.
Chimpanzees are closely related to(相关的)humans,so scientists study them a lot. For example, when they are sick or hurt, they find ways to care for themselves.
In 2021,Dr Elodie Freymann went to Uganda to study chimpanzees in the Budongo Forest. She wanted to learn how they deal with their injuries(伤口). Her team looked through 30 years of research records and spent eight months studying two groups of chimpanzees.
They found 34 examples of chimpanzees taking care of their own injuries, often by licking(舔)themselves or using leaves. Sometimes, they chewed(咀嚼)plants and put them on injuries. Licking can clean cuts and stop infection. Some plant leaves can do this too.
What’s even more interesting were the seven examples of chimpanzees helping others. In one example,a young chimp sucked(吮吸)on another one’s leg to help clean the injury.
A big question is whether these actions are natural or taught. In one example,a young chimp watched her mother chew a leaf and put it on a cut. Freymann thinks some actions are natural, but others are taught. She plans to keep studying to find out more.
