C 原典品读
Poor Toad was very unhappy in prison. His room was small and very cold. The food was bad, and the bed was hard. Toad couldn’t sleep, and he usually felt quite ill.
The jailers(看守监狱的人) were unkind to him. They did not think he was important. When he complained about the food, the cold and his bed, they just laughed at him.
“This isn’t a hotel, Toad,” one of them said. “It’s a prison, and you shouldn’t forget it. And you’ll be here for forty years.”
Luckily, a jailer’s daughter liked him. She also felt sorry for him. Her name was Phoebe. She worked in the prison and brought Toad his food every day.
“I don’t think you should be here, Toad,” she said. “You didn’t hurt anybody. The only thing you did wrong was to call the judge ‘Fat Face’.”
She didn’t know that he had stolen a car. The judge had not sent him to prison for
that. He had sent him to prison for calling him “Fat Face”.
“And you’re right,” she said. “The judge does have a fat face. It’s wrong to keep you in prison for that.”
“That’s what I tell myself every day,” Toad said. “I am the Great and Famous Toad. I live at Toad Hall. I have many friends.”
“Perhaps I can help you escape(逃跑),” Phoebe said.
“Really?” he said. Toad was suddenly excited. “How can you do that?”
“My aunt comes here every day to do the washing in the prison. I think for a little money she will let me bring in some of her clothes. You can put them on and pretend to be her. The jailers will let you out.”
