Sun Qiye is a Liuli craftsman from Zibo, Shandong Province. He drew attention for making a beautiful Liuli copy of the Ming Dynasty Empress Xiaoduan's phoenix crown(孝端皇后凤冠). The crown is made up of nearly 5,000 parts, including nine dragons, nine phoenixes and 4,800 Liuli pearls.
Before, Sun Qiye never got in touch with Liuli. He only took Liuli-making courses because of his mother. Though uninterested at first, he became interested in the traditional art form after trying to
replicate a Liuli butterfly in class. Encouraged by a growing interest in the craft, Sun created a chrysanthemum-themed Liuli artwork and won much praise online. This gave him the chance to create a real crown for a museum exhibition. Although he had just over a year and a half of experience in traditional Liuli artwork, Sun accepted the project. "I wanted to challenge myself to bring the traditional art of Zibo Liuli into conversation with a national treasure," he said.
The recreation process was more difficult than his team had thought. Sun and three other craftsmen could only work out the details through online photos and measurement data, and then find the right skills for each part. That was because none of them had ever seen the real crown.
After many failed efforts, they finally succeeded. " As a new-generation Liuli craftsman, I'm proud to develop the Liuli art of Zibo," Sun said. "This crown is my way of honoring the craft of the past and giving it new life."
