五、阅读理解
The Neverending Story is a fantasy book by German writer Michael Ende (1929-1995), first published in 1979.
A film with the same name was adapted (改编) from the book in 1984. This fairy story is not only loved by children but also has a most important message for adults (成人).
The hero of the story is Bastian Balthazar, a lonely young boy being raised by his dad. Bastian has a sad childhood. His father doesn't look after him very well because he's always down after his wife died. Bastian is bullied (欺负) at school.
One day, Bastian runs away from the bullies and stays in a bookshop. He steals (偷) a book called The Neverending Story. Bastian
loses himself in the book.
The book that Bastian reads is about a land called Fantastica. The Childlike Empress (女王) Fantastica is sick and her land is in trouble. A dark force (力量) called The Nothing is attacking it. She asks a boy, Atreyu, to help her fight against The Nothing before it destroys Fantastica.
This book is very creative. By reading it, Bastian forgets his trouble and becomes someone with a task in Fantastica. He works together with Atreyu to fight against The Nothing.
In real life, readers are sometimes happy and sometimes unhappy. Some readers have different problems, while others have few. But all of them can relate to (有关) The Neverending Story. As a skillful storyteller, Michael Ende has connected (结合) the story to things that might happen in his readers' lives. Of course, it is a wonderful book that tells a meaningful story about the world.
