Tom and Becky held up their candles and looked around the cave. Suddenly Becky said, "I wonder how long we've been down here, Tom?" She grew worried. "We'd better start back."
"Yes, we'd better."
They tried to find their way back, but none of the passages looked familiar. They walked around and around the cave, but they couldn't find a way out. "Tom, Tom, we're lost! We can never get out of this awful place!" cried Becky. She sank to the ground and burst into tears. Tom put his arms around her and tried to calm her down.
After a while, they moved on again—all they could do was to move, keep moving. At last Becky's legs refused to carry her farther. She sat down. "Tom, I am so hungry!" she cried. Tom took a cake out of his pocket and broke it in half. After they finished eating, they watched their last bit of candle melt away.
Then an idea came to Tom. There were some side passages nearby. He took a kite string from his pocket, tied one end to a rock and held the other end in his hand as he explored. When he walked, he slowly let out the string behind him so he could follow it back to Becky without getting lost. He kept going until the string ran out.
Just as he was about to turn back, he saw a small bright spot ahead—it looked like daylight! He went back for Becky and told her the good news. They both followed the string to the light and climbed out of the cave. Outside, they fell to the ground and cried with happiness.
