In China, the 12th month of the lunar calendar is called La Yue. The month is full of interesting festivals and traditions.
The Laba Festival is the first festival in this month. From this day on, people begin to get ready for Chinese New Year.
People like to eat Laba porridge on the morning of the Laba Festival. The traditional Laba porridge has eight kinds of ingredients, like rice, red beans, dried lotus seeds(干莲子), some nuts and different kinds of dried fruits. So the porridge is also called eight - treasure porridge. You can also put other things you like in the porridge. To make the porridge delicious, people need to cook it for a long time. Many people even start to cook it from the night of the day before, so they can have a bowl of warm and delicious porridge the next morning. The porridge is not just rich in
nutrition that is good for people, but a hope for the coming of Chinese New Year.
Laba porridge is not the only nice food in La Yue. Laba garlic(蒜) is popular in the north. People begin to put garlic in vinegar from that day on, and eat it with jiaozi during Chinese New Year. But in the south, people like making sausages.
Xiaonian is usually on the 23rd or 24th day of the last lunar month. Traditionally, it is an important day when people place sacrifices(祭品) in the kitchen.
