a smart invention called Recycleye. It has won them a top award for young inventors in Europe
because
it can sort(分类) waste well using AI. It does a much better job than the
methods
in the past.
Recycleye uses a(n)
smart
system that can sort waste. It also uses a treadmill(跑步机) and a camera to tell
apart
different types of waste. A robotic arm can then pick out any
valuable
material. “Our system can run on the fastest belts(传送带) within a waste plant(工厂)
while
others can't do this,” Hedley told the media. “It helps us get to about a 300 per cent performance
increase
.”
Recycleye can even tell apart different types
of plastics, like those that are
safe
to be used for food and those that aren't. This used to be one of the most
difficult
parts of the waste sorting process. Now, with Recycleye, recycling has become much more efficient,
reducing
the production and use of carbon-intensive(碳密集的) materials.
The seed for this life-changing invention was planted while Dewulf and Hedley were doing their master's studies at Imperial College London. They
deeply
explored the potential(可能性) of computers to help in sorting waste, sparking their goal to improve the recycling industry. Dewulf's research paper on waste management caught a lot of
attention
from the industry, encouraging him to explore further.
Their robots work all the time, every day of the year. Before this, sorting waste was mostly done by people, who were slower and sometimes made
mistakes
