A couple of months ago, I made a promise to myself. I had put some money in my wallet with the purpose of giving the money away to the first person I came across who needed it.
But I always had fear of giving. Whenever I opened my wallet and saw the money, I was reminded of my purpose for it, and I would feel a little sorry for not acting on it. (36)
That was a cold morning in London. While walking to work on a busy street, I passed a blind old lady with her hand out. (37)
A moment of sympathy (同情) washed over me, and I remembered the money that had been lying in my wallet all these months.
(38)
Gently, I took her hand, placed the notes into it, and closed her fingers over the notes so that she could feel the money and understand my action.
After I got up, I slowly moved away. I felt like I achieved something. The lady nodded her head a little bit and smiled in return. (39)
After that, I thought about why such a simple act had taken so long. This small act was a huge step. (40)
What a gift it is to carry out these small but meaningful actions!
A. I felt happy and moved on.
B. Why not take action to help the old?
C. It helped me walk through my fears of giving.
D. She returned the money to me and said thanks.
E. I took out the money and lowered my body to her level.
