Cai Yuanpei was a famous Chinese educator. He lived from 1868 to 1940. He was born in Shaoxing and grew up there. From a young age, Cai showed an interest in learning and was strict(严格的) with himself. His love for learning and hard work helped him get success in the imperial examination(科举考试) at an early age.
Cai got his education in China and later went to study in Germany. There he got to know new ideas and thoughts. He returned to China in 1911. As an educator, Cai was known for his creative ideas about education. He believed that everyone should have the right(权利) to get an education, that is, education for all. He also thought that true education should be about developing the whole person, not just learning knowledge.
When he was the president(校长) of Peking University(大学), Cai carried out many changes. He introduced new academic(学术的) programmes, and attracted many excellent teachers to teach at the university. The university became a lively place where students could discuss ideas and learn from different cultures.
Not just an educator, Cai also got success in politics(政治). He made a difference to several important events. Even today, Cai’s ideas about education are still popular in China and even around the world.
