四、阅读理解
Whenever I see banana pudding on a menu, I think of a special moment in my life when I learned an important lesson about envy (嫉妒) and love.
It happened when Suzy came to visit me after her father married (娶) me.
I liked the kid. Of course, as her stepmother (继母), I wanted to win her. She seemed to like me, but I wasn't sure, especially (尤其) at mealtime. She enjoyed watching me prepare the evening meal very much.
"What are you doing?" she asked.
"Making potato salad," I replied.
My answers did not seem to please her. She shook (摇) her head
disappointedly. "My mama doesn't make it that way," she said.
Unluckily, her father believed that children should eat everything on their plate, including a dish that I made in a different way from her mama did. At the table, Suzy cried and shouted, "Mama doesn't make it that way." By this time, I got to dislike both her mother and her way of cooking.
Then, I found a dish her mother didn't make, but the kid liked. That is banana pudding. She helped me in the kitchen. I
t was a time of sharing happiness and laughter.
On the last night before she went back home, we made the banana pudding again. Suddenly, I knew that when Suzy got back home, her mother would hear a lot about "Karen doesn't do it that way". I thought her mama must know I loved her child. Mothers all use one important ingredient (原料) in their cooking, the best one—love.
