Almost two years ago, I stood on a dormitory (宿舍) balcony, joined hands with my three closest friends and listened to one of them tell a story about four girls with different backgrounds (背景) and gifts (天赋). They left home and went to college at a place called Happy Valley.
After we left our friend's dormitory that last night of our freshman year (大学一年级), we ended up on the grass, playing games and talking for hours. Alisa, Karen, Gabrielle and I spent that day together just being freshmen—going to the sandwich shop for the last lunch of the term, trying on each other's clothes, watching films and it seemed that we would never see each other again. For freshmen, saying goodbye at the end of the first year can feel like saying goodbye forever.
My advice to any freshman is to value those moments. You may grow different from the people you spent your first year with. Even if (即使) you almost forget your first year roommates two years later, you can always remember that year and the feeling that your first year of college brought. We learned more outside the classroom than we learned inside it. That dormitory is where we learned the lessons of our freshman year. I think the most important lesson I learned was what true friendship is.
The story Alisa told on that balcony is far from over. I sometimes wonder if the following is how it will end, "... and those four little girls grew up and made their dreams come true. They found themselves all over the country, from farms to cities, doing everything they wanted to do—a computer engineer, a doctor, a lawyer, and a teacher. And sometimes they would go back together at that valley and see their friends, laughing about the good times."
