Schools in ancient (古代的) China are different from schools today. Most ancient schools are small and simple, but they are full of culture and wisdom (智慧).
Classroom—The classroom is usually a quiet room with wooden tables and chairs. There are no blackboards, and teachers write on paper or use a sand table for practice.
Study desk—Every student has a small desk. They put their books, brushes and inkstones (砚台) on it. The desk is not very big, but it is enough for writing and reading.
Bookshelf—There are no big libraries, but schools have wooden bookshelves. They keep books like The Analects of Confucius (《论语》), Three-Character Classic (《三字经》) and Standards for Students (《弟子规》). Students read them carefully.
Inkstone—Students use inkstones to make ink for writing. They put water on the stone and rub (磨) an inkstick (墨条) on it. Then, they write with brushes.
Bell—Schools do not have electric (电子的) bells. Instead, they use a metal (金属的) bell or a wooden (木头的) clapper (响板) to tell students when class starts or ends.
Ancient Chinese schools may look simple, but they teach students important values like hard work and respect.
