When it comes to sugar, you may think of candies, cakes and chocolate, but you may eat too much sugar without knowing it in your daily life. That’s because delicious foods and even foods marked as “healthy” often have hidden (隐藏的) sugar. Palmer-Wright, a nutritionist (营养学家), said much of the sugar we eat is hidden sugar.
“Many cereals and cereal bars (谷物棒) are full of sugar (some brands have up to 12g of sugar in just one bar!) and fruit yogurt can have a lot of sugar too,” she said. Sugar makes us feel happy, but it is bad for our health. “If you eat a lot of sweet food, you may have some health problems, such as obesity and diabetes,” said Palmer-Wright. If you want to eat less sugar, you can do the following.
First, don’t drink soft drinks, sports drinks or fruit juice. When you are thirsty, just drink water. Second, eat whole foods (天然或少加工食品), such as fresh vegetables, fruit, fish, tofu, brown rice, barley and wholegrain breads. Eat fewer cakes, candies and chocolates. Third, read the ingredient list (配料表) and the nutrition facts label (营养成分表) before you buy food. By doing this, you will know what type of sugar is in the food and how much sugar it has. In our daily lives, taking a few minutes to double-check (复核) the ingredient list can seem like a hard task, but it might just make a difference (起作用) when it comes to your health.
