Tongcheng City is in Anhui Province. It has rich culture. There are many famous historical sights. Among them, a two-metre-wide alley(小巷), or Liu Chi Xiang in Chinese, is a very popular one. Lots of people come to visit it every year. There is a touching story about the alley.
In the Qing Dynasty, an officer named Zhang Ying received a letter from his family one day. From the letter, Zhang learned that his neighbour, the Wu family, wanted to build a house. But there was a disagreement(分歧) between the two families. It was about the alley between the houses. Zhang’s family wrote the letter to let the Wu family give up. However, Zhang wrote a letter back, saying:
“Writing a letter, miles away, just for a wall
Why not give them one metre?
Looking at the ten-thousand-mile-long Great Wall
Where is its builder Emperor Qinshihuang?”
After reading the letter, Zhang’s family moved their wall one metre back for their neighbour, because they realized that the neighbours were much more important than the wall. The Wu family was deeply touched and moved their wall one metre back too. So there was a two-metre-wide alley between the two families.
Hundreds of years later, the story of Liu Chi Xiang still tells us that kindness and tolerance(宽容) can take away walls between people, and they can create(创造) love as well.
