Ren Yingshuo is a Grade 8 student at Shijiazhuang No. 2 High School in Hebei Province. He makes a hand-drawn “Campus(校园) Plant Map” with 118 kinds of plants from his school.
Ren says, “Our Biology teacher often brings real life to class. He talks a lot about different campus plants in his lessons.” The teacher's classes make him interested and he wants to learn more, so he plans to draw a map of the plants on campus.
However, Ren finds making the map harder than he thinks. He says, “The biggest problem is that I don't know most plants. I have to
identify them one by one. I use Biology books to learn about flowers, stems(茎) and leaves.” Then he checks them on the internet for sure.
Starting in October last year, Ren spent over a year making three maps of campus plants. The first shows autumn plants in 2024. The second has many spring and summer flowers. The third is about the green trees in winter. He mixes(混合) 3 maps together to make his final “Campus Plant Map”.
His classmates are interested in it. Some even share much information with him. The map is now much better.
Ren says, “Making the maps helps me understand plants better. What I see with my own eyes is easier to remember.” Students should learn beyond(超越) the books. Learning also happens in real life.
