The creator of “pastoral poetry”: Tao Yuanming
Tao Yuanming, who lived during the Eastern Jin Dynasty, is seen as the creator of “pastoral poetry”. This is an important genre(流派) in Chinese poetry that is mainly about the beauty of the countryside.
Tao spent most of his life in the countryside. He would read, receive guests, and write poems about the pleasures and difficulties of life in the countryside, as well as his decision to refuse to work as an officer in the government.
Anyway, writing poems was always his favourite. He once wrote a group of poems named “Return to Gardens and Fields”. Personally, I like the third one most. This poem was written shortly after he left his job. He wanted to live a simple life.
The first six lines describe his new job as a farmer. He wasn't born in the countryside and he had no experience of working in the field. So it was not hard to see that he wasn't good at farming, as wild plants grew over his bean shoots(豆芽). Even so, it was quite clear that he preferred his new job to his old job.
What do you think makes his poems special? The language in Tao's poems might seem simple, but according to Su Shi, a famous Song Dynasty poet, it takes a lot of talent to appear effortless(不费力) like Tao.
Tao's simple and direct writing was different from the writing style of his time, but he was brave enough to break the rules.
