Respecting older people is a tradition in China. There are many ways to express respect. When an older person enters a room, everyone stands up. People are introduced from the oldest to the youngest. When we present a book to an older person, two hands are used. Young people always offer their seats to older people on a crowded metro or bus.
In Western countries, older people are called “seniors” instead of “old people”. They don’t think they are old and like to do things themselves. Even after retirement, they take up hobbies, part-time jobs and new activities to stay active.
Westerners respect their seniors. Seniors usually take trains and buses for free. They have discounts(折扣) in stores and restaurants too. But Western seniors often live alone. On holidays, the family gather at the grandparents’ home. A smile and a hug are enough to show respect.
