[2025南通市海安市期中改编]In Yangla, a remote town located in the mountains of Yunnan's Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture over 3,000 metres above sea level, Doctor Nasheng devotes herself to caring for more than 5,400 villagers.
Nasheng studied Tibetan medicine at Qinghai University. Her love for this field started in childhood. She was always curious about Chinese medicine. But what truly pushed her was seeing her fellow villagers struggle with healthcare. “They once had to travel far to see doctors inland. Besides long trips, language barriers and cultural differences made it even harder,” she said, adding that many elderly villagers only speak Tibetan. This made her decide to learn Tibetan medicine and return to help her hometown.
She joined Yangla's town health centre in September 2021. Although her hometown Yunling is in the same county, getting to Yangla takes a tiring seven- to eight-hour drive—crossing Baima Snow Mountain and following a winding path along the Jinsha River. She lives in a simple room inside the hospital ward, and the town only has one barbecue restaurant for entertainment. But she never thinks of giving up.
Yangla's villages spread across over 1,000 square kilometres, so the health centre holds monthly free mobile clinics. On Nasheng's first clinic trip, she and her team drove 5 hours, and then met a mudslide. They had to carry all medical supplies over the mountain on foot. After treating an elderly patient who worried about getting follow-up care, she suggested building a small health station. With the local government's support, one opened in June 2022, making it easier for villagers to see doctors. In 2023, she also helped set up a room for herbal baths to ease villagers' rheumatism(风湿病) and joint pain.
Nasheng keeps improving her skills. In 2024, she trained in Xizang to learn therapies like bloodletting(放血疗法) and Tibetan stick therapy. Villagers love her: an 80-year-old gave her rare fruit (picked from a lower-altitude town), and during the Spring Festival, they invited her team to a warm Tibetan party.
Looking ahead, Nasheng wants to study for a master's degree to learn more about acupuncture. “But no matter where I go,” she said, “I’ll always come back—this is my home.”
