It was very hot and unpleasant inside the fort(堡垒). Jim had a plan and he needed to leave the fort. He took two pistols(手枪) and left quietly when Gray and the squire were with the captain.
First he ran down to the white rocks and looked for Ben Gunn's boat. He soon found it under some bushes. It was a simple boat, made out of branches and goat skins, and it was very light to carry. Jim decided to wait until it was dark and row to the Hispaniola. He wanted to cut the ship adrift(漂流的), leaving it to float with the current(水流). As he waited, he could see the pirates' fire burning, and out on the water the lights on the ship.
As soon as it was dark, Jim got into the boat and rowed out to the Hispaniola. He found the rope that connected the ship to the anchor and cut through it with his knife until the ship was free. As he did this, he could hear the angry voices of Israel Hands in a cabin above him.
The ship began to move away in the night air.
By then Jim was so tired that he fell asleep and dreamed of home. When he awoke, he found himself at the south-west end of Treasure Island. He was only about 300 metres from the shore. When he lay quietly in the bottom of the boat, it moved perfectly over the water. But when he sat up, it went out of control. So he lay down, and used the paddle(船桨) from that position. He moved slowly closer to the land, but the current was strong and the boat moved past the bay. Jim moved slowly to the next bay, and suddenly he saw the Hispaniola in front of him.
