Papermaking is known as one of the four great inventions of ancient Chinese civilization. Among different kinds of paper, Xuan paper holds an important place. Many ancient documents and artworks might not have survived till today if not for Xuan paper.
Xuan paper has always been valued by every Chinese generation as a source of pride since it is not only a necessary part of Chinese culture, but also a witness to Chinese history.
Xuan paper, as one of the most important carriers of Chinese culture, has been given the name "King of All Paper", because a large number of great works by ancient Chinese calligraphers and painters were created on Xuan paper. According to the National Library of China, there are millions of ancient paper books in the library, and most of them were made of Xuan paper.
So why did Xuan paper become such a favourite of writers and artists? The answer might lie in its origin(起源). An often-told story about the origin of Xuan paper says that Kong Dan, a papermaking worker, searched for a kind of paper that would not discolour or go mouldy(发霉的) to keep the picture of his teacher Cai Lun, the inventor of papermaking, and eventually created Xuan paper.
With a smooth surface, pure texture and high tensile(拉伸的) strength, Xuan paper can be kept for a long time. If it is preserved well, its longevity can reach more than 1,000 years while the ink and colour on it remain fresh and bright. The paper, therefore, is named "Paper of Ages".
