On a cold December afternoon in 2025, a 4-year-old boy fell into an ice hole while playing near a lake in Wuzhong, Ningxia. The cold water made him scared. He kept waving his arms and kicking his legs wildly, shouting and trying his best to get out of the icy water. People were afraid that stepping on the thin ice would make it break even more.
Just then, 13-year-old Li Jiating rode past on her electric bike. When she saw the boy
struggling in the icy water, she rushed over without thinking. "I'm light—Let me help!" she shouted. She lay flat on the ice to spread her weight, then took a long plastic pipe from a man nearby. She handed the pipe to the boy and told him to hold it tightly. But just as she pulled the boy up a little, a loud noise was heard—the ice under her body broke. Li fell into the cold water too, but she still held the pipe tightly with both hands to stop the boy from going down deeper.
Luckily, people quickly pulled Li out first. Soon after, firefighters arrived with tools and saved the boy successfully. Li was wet and shaking, yet she left without a word. She even hid her wet clothes into her bike basket in order not to worry her parents.
The boy's family was really grateful and wanted to thank Li. They posted search notices online. On December 17, one of Li's relatives read the story and recognized her. When the boy's family offered her a reward of some money, she refused it politely and only took a box of milk. "I just wanted to help him," she said softly.
Li's brave act has warmed millions of people's hearts. Many people call her "the light of life in winter"—a young girl who changed a cold, dangerous moment into a story of hope.
