Taipingnijiaojiao(太平泥叫叫), one of the provincial intangible cultural heritages(非物质文化遗产) from Zhenjiang, is special for its kneading(捏) skills, using tools from daily life and decorations with traditional elements(元素).
About 20 years ago, Zhou Baokang first noticed taipingnijiaojiao during a temple fair(庙会) in Huashan Village, Zhenjiang. As a lover of folk art, he was soon attracted to it. Now, the old man is an inheritor of the traditional art form.
Taipingnijiaojiao looks just like a clay toy. But it can be used as a whistle(哨子). It's said to date back over 1,000 years. Often, it uses traditional cultural elements that carry good meanings, like plum blossoms(梅花).
Anyone can try making taipingnijiaojiao, according to Zhou. The key is kneading it with your fingers. "Without any drafts(草图), you just turn a lump of clay into the thing you want, from animals to plants," Zhou said. You can use anything from combs to spoons as tools. "For colouring, you can even use oil paint if you don't have pigments(颜料)," Zhou added.
Zhou particularly loves to make taipingnijiaojiao in the shape of animals. He makes taipingnijiaojiao for the Chinese animal sign of each year. In 2022, while making tigers, he tried to show the spirit of the "king of all beasts" through simple but exaggerated(夸张的) details, like big mouths and teeth. "I was inspired by the xieyi style of painting, which stresses simplicity," Zhou said.
Zhou works hard to pass down his skills. He has been teaching kids to make the toy at schools for many years. He has also opened a folk art museum to display the toy. "Taipingnijiaojiao is a small toy that carries rich traditional culture. We should pass it down," Zhou said.
