Last year, I went to a special school in Chicago for community service. Before I got on the bus, my friend asked me a question, "Why are you going there?" I did not know how to answer the question.
The school was not far from my school, but it looked like it was in a different world. A group of children were waiting for us. When I was giving a lesson, a boy suddenly walked towards me. He held my arm and pushed me to the ground. I could not understand what he was doing at first, and then I was very angry. Though I was very angry, I controlled my anger. We looked into each other's eyes and both said nothing.
A teacher stopped this awkward silence. She asked the boy to make an apology. "Sorry, Miss Black," the boy cried fearfully and nervously. He looked totally different from the boy who was violent before. I still said nothing, but I realized something unusual about this child.
After lunch I asked the teacher for information about the child. She said that the child had a serious illness at an early age, but his parents were very poor. So they abandoned (遗弃) him. I suddenly realized I could answer the question my friend asked me at the beginning of the day.
There are so many people in the world that need help. Community service workers try to make them feel better. Playing with lonely children may not make a big difference, but it can light a corner in the children's hearts, making them know they are loved.
