Yandang Mountain is known as the “No. 1 Mountain in South - east China”. 1 It stands about 1,057 metres above sea level. Its name comes from a dried - up lake at the top. The lake is called Yanhu Lake, or Goose Lake. 2
The mountain was not widely known until the Song dynasty because it was hard to hike across it. The famous Ming dynasty explorer Xu Xiake once said, “Only the gods can see all the wonders of Yandang Mountain.”
Over the past hundreds of years, many temples have been built on the mountain. 3 These works include stone sculptures(雕塑), calligraphic tablets(书法碑刻) and paintings on the rocks.
4 One of the most famous is Ling Feng, or Spiritual Peaks. This area has many strange peaks and cliffs (峭壁). They look different from different sides. Take Hezhang Peak for example. The 270 - metre - high peak can look like a pair of hands, a young lady in qipao or two people in each other's arms.
Another well - known sight is Sanzhepu, or Three - Terraced(阶梯型的) Falls. 5 They are some of the most special waterfalls on the mountain.

Many people like travelling in mountains now. But what can we do if there is a sudden rain or even a storm? We need to be prepared and keep ourselves safe.
Put on any gear(用具) that you've brought
All hikers should carry lightweight rain gear or at least a raincoat in case of rain.
Keep your body moving
Move around as you wait so that your body stays warm. For example, step side to side.
Find a shelter
Look around for a place to get out of the rain, such as a tree, a cave, and even your tent. If you hear thunder, find an immediate shelter. Staying outside during a thunderstorm is dangerous.
Watch for changes in the terrain(地形)
Rain can cause flooding, mud slides, rock slides and slippery trails, all of which can be very dangerous.
If you are in a lightning storm, the most dangerous places include open areas, hills, mountains, trees and waterways. Lightning is most likely to hit these areas. If you're in the woods, try to find a small tree that is surrounded(环绕) by other taller trees. Hide yourself in the lowest place you can find.
Put down your trekking poles(登山杖) or other long things. In a lightning storm, trekking poles and long, pointy things make a great conductor for the lightning and are therefore very dangerous. Protect yourself by laying these items on the ground away from you.
