The Food Delivery War: JD. com vs. Meituan
In early 2025, JD. com entered China’s food delivery market, challenging Meituan, the industry leader. JD. com attracted restaurants by providing “zero commission fees (no money for joining)” and “five insurances and one fund(五险一金)” for its riders. This shocked Meituan, whose stock(股票) price dropped 7% overnight.
To compete, JD. com used its good delivery system “Dada Now” to deliver meals in just 22 minutes, faster than Meituan’s 42 minutes.
Meituan fought back: it shortened delivery time to 25 minutes and planned social security for riders. The war between both companies leads to improving worker rights and lowering costs for restaurants, benefiting millions.
This competition shows how the two big companies innovate(革新) to benefit restaurants, delivery riders and how consumers get better services.

Wan Haibo, a 43-year-old deliveryman(快递员) in Tianjin, was honoured(尊敬) as a National Model Worker(全国劳动模范) in 2025. After receiving the honour, Wan said, “I feel very excited and 1 (pride).”
2 (bear) in the countryside in Handan, Hebei, Wan went to Tianjin in 2018 and became a deliveryman. “There’s no easy way to success.
