Tanghulu is a traditional snack from Northern China. People of all ages love it, especially kids.
It is usually made of haws(山楂), which are full of vitamin C. About 800 years ago, one of the emperor’s wives was sick and had a poor appetite. The doctor told her to eat 5-10 boiled haws with sugar before dinner. She felt better after two weeks. People heard about it and started making it too. They put haws on sticks, dipped them into hot syrup(糖浆), and cooled them down. The syrup made a hard and sweet shell around haws, like wearing a sugar jacket. It tastes both sweet and sour at the same time.

Now people use many other kinds of fruits to make tanghulu, such as cherry tomatoes, oranges, strawberries, blueberries, kiwis, bananas, and grapes. Making tanghulu at home is super easy. It takes less than 20 minutes. Whether you’re looking for a quick snack for yourself or treating friends, tanghulu is a good choice. Here are the steps:
a) Thread the fruit onto a bamboo stick. You can use the whole one or cut it in half.
b) Make the syrup. Heat the sugar with water until there are large bubbles.
c) Carefully dip the fruit into the hot syrup, and then quickly put it into ice water. This will help harden the syrup.
