Qipao first came out in the 1920s as a loose dress like the one-piece gowns (长衫). At that time, usually men wore them. Then they became popular among young women. About ten years later, people changed the dress to fit women's bodies better. They became a must-have among fashionable women, especially(尤其) in Shanghai.

In the 1940s,qipao became more form-fitting(贴身的). By the 1950s,they had become a symbol(象征)of elegance(优雅). Today, many women in China still wear qipao for formal events.
Traditional qipao dresses were usually made of expensive silk. But today they are made of different kinds of materials, like cotton and linen (亚麻布). So more women have enough money to buy qipao. Today, designers also make a change to the dress's buttons(纽扣). The traditional qipao used knot buttons(盘扣). They were difficult to use. Today designers use zippers(拉链) in qipao.
