The Great Wall of China is also called “Ten Thousand Li Great Wall”. In fact, it’s more than 20,000 kilometres long. It winds its way from west to east, across deserts, over mountains, through valleys till at last it reaches the sea. It is one of the wonders of the world.
The Great Wall has a history of over two thousand years. It’s earliest sections date back to the Western Zhou Dynasty. During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States Periods, more walls were built to defend different kingdoms. Emperor Qin Shihuang later connected the northern walls to form a unified defense system.
In some sections, the Great Wall is wide enough for five people to walk side by side. Watchtowers stand along the wall, where soldiers kept watch. They sent smoke signals by day and fire by night to warn of enemy attacks.
It was very difficult to build such a wall in the ancient days without any modern machines. All the work was done by hand. A lot of men died from exhaustion(筋疲力尽). The Great Wall was constructed with stone, earth and the sacrifice of millions of men.
Today the Great Wall has become a place of interest not only to the Chinese but to people from all over the world. Many of them know the famous Chinese saying, “He who has never been to the Great Wall is not a true man. ”
