"Travel is the body on the road, while reading is the mind on the road. Both offer a way to satisfy our great curiosity," Ye Zi, a young scholar(学者), said on the new season of the Chinese TV show I Read Books on an Island.
This weekly show began airing its third season on Oct 17, 2024. On the show, some of China's famous writers talk about their favourite literature.
While the last two seasons were set on islands in Southern China, the third season sees the group of writers travel to Crete, the largest island in Greece. "The audience can experience the cultural exchanges between China and the West. We hope that the show will help good literature from China and abroad reach more people," Li Li, a producer of the show, told China Youth Daily.
The show tells us the important role of literature in connecting cultures. When the group of writers saw a beautiful sunrise on the island of Crete, they talked about how famous writers from China and the West write about sunrise. Though these writers come from different cultures, their work shows that there's something universal(共同的) about the human experience. Yu also discussed the difference between Chinese and Western literary traditions. He discovered that the sun often symbolizes love in Western literature, while for Chinese writers, the moon stands for love.
"The show offers a space for writers, readers and literary works to 'meet' each other," Yu said in the show. Going further into the world of literature, we can connect with ourselves and the world around us.
