The Chongyang Festival is a traditional festival in China. We also call it the Double Ninth Festival
because
it falls on the ninth day of the ninth month in the Chinese lunar calendar(农历). It has a history of more than 2,000 years. In Chinese culture, the number nine is the largest number—it's a homophone(同音异形异义词) to the Chinese word "jiu", which means "a long and
healthy
(health) life". In China, people usually go hiking or climb
mountains
(mountain) with their family and friends during the festival. Besides, they drink chrysanthemum wine(菊花酒)
and
eat Chongyang cakes on that day. They think these can bring them good luck and best
wishes
 (wish).
Today, the Double Ninth Festival has
a
new meaning. It's a special day for us
to show
(show) our love to the elders. Some people may go to the old
people's
(people) homes to give elders presents and help them. The festival usually
comes
(come) in the beautiful season of autumn. Many families would like to go for outdoor activities and enjoy
themselves
 (they).
