If you walk around a park in the morning, you might see people doing these slow and graceful movements. T’ai chi, a kind of Chinese kung fu, is a special and valuable part of Chinese culture.
In 2020, UNESCO added t’ai chi to its Intangible Cultural Heritage List(非物质文化遗产). Many t’ai chi fans were happy to hear about this.
“This will make t’ai chi more popular around the world. Hopefully, more people will become healthier by practising it,” said Chen Bin, a t’ai chi master from the village of Chenjianggou, Henan. This village is the birthplace of Chen-style t’ai chi.
It’s true that doing t’ai chi is good for our health. It can make our muscles(肌肉) stronger and help us walk and move more freely. Our hearts can also work better by doing t’ai chi.
But t’ai chi is more than just a sport. “It shows traditional Chinese philosophy(哲学), such as being in harmony(和谐) with nature and using softness to beat hardness,” Chen said.
Today, more than 100 million people in over 150 countries are taking part in t’ai chi. It becomes an icon of Chinese culture. People all over the world get together to learn and practise it, sharing their own cultural understandings. It is such a good way for people from different countries to understand and experience(体验) our Chinese culture.
