Customs of Visiting a Chinese Family
If you are going to visit a Chinese family, here are some important customs to remember.
First, about the time: It’s polite to arrive on time or a few minutes early. Never be late without calling
first, because it’s considered rude. Second, about greetings: When you meet the family, you can shake
hands with them. Most Chinese people don’t hug strangers, so a warm smile and handshake are enough.
It’s also nice to bring a small gift, like fruit or tea. Third, about table manners: When eating, use
chopsticks correctly. Don’t stick them straight up in the rice, as it’s a bad sign. Sit up straight at the
table, and wait for the host to start eating before you begin. It’s polite to say “thank you” for the food.
Following these customs will help you have a great time with your Chinese host family!
